Ciutadella – Cala Macarella – Cala Macarelleta

macarelleta menorca

  1. Start off from the roundabout at the entrance to the city with a magnificent sculpture of a horse.
  2. At the roundabout, take the 3rd exit towards Avenida de Palma de Mallorca.
  3. Continue straight along this road for some 600 km. On the way you’ll pass straight through a roundabout, continuing along the same road until you come to a large roundabout
  4. At this roundabout, take the 1st exit into the RC-2. Continue straight on for approximately 550 m until you come to another roundabout.
  5. At this roundabout, take the 3rd exit then continue straight along the Camino de Sant Joan de Missa for approximately 4.6 km, always following the signs to beaches like Arenal de Son Saura/Cala en Turqueta/Macarella.
  6. The road then divides into two. If you go the right you get to the beaches of El Arenal de Son Saura or Cala en Turqueta. However, you should turn left, following the signs for Macarella, and continue for approximately 5.2 km.
  7. Next you’ll see another fork in the road. Take the right hand fork, following the sign to Macarella, and go on for approximately 2.8 km.
  8. Cala Macarella has 2 parking sites, one some 15 minutes away on foot (900 m from the beach), and the other only 5 minutes away (300 m from the beach). The first site is free, but site nearer the beach has a charge.
Whichever you choose, you should wear comfortable shoes.
  9. Park your vehicle and enjoy a perfect day in the most typical unspoiled cove in Menorca, where the famous Estrella Damm beer advertising spot was filmed in 2010.
  10. Macarella beach forms part of a Natural Area of Special Interest (ANEI) on the south coast of Ciutadella. It has a “u” shape, is medium-sized (140m long by 40m wide), on either side there are high cliffs covered with bushy pine woods, wetlands, a ravine, a section of the Camí de Cavalls track behind, giving it a wild appearance; a sand bank, crystalline peaceful waters, a gentle slope and a medium influx of local bathers and tourists.
There’s a beach snack bar which is crowded with hungry bathers at mid-day.
*You can get here by the route we have described, or you can make your way on foot from the Serpentona development located on the right of Cala Galdana beach, taking a path that runs along the coast. This will take you approximately 45 minutes.

Right next to Macarella (less than 10 minutes away) is Macarelleta, a smaller shell-shaped cove (20 m long by 40 m wide) with a bank of fine white sand, a gentle slope and crystalline water. Nudism is frequently practised here.
